Hello, I'm Mitsuharu Shimamura.
In this web site, I would like to show you taste modifier plants which I'm studying. The taste modifier plants are defined as plants which trick a tongue and change the function of the taste temporarily. I'm a pioneer in this field.
I have been giving the lectures on the subject in elementary and junior high school for incresing their interest in science and also for adults. In the lectures, the audience obtained are given an opportunity to taste the plants such as miracle fruit and gymnema. The content of the lecture includes the explanation of the taste which is not so familiar to us than be expected, even though they are close to us.
In June 2001, I've just started a cooperated research on the application of the taste modifier plants to medical treatment with a physician in Nagoya. This is the biginning in Japan. In case of miracle fruits, for instance, they enable diabetics to taste sweetness without taking sugar. Therefore, the patients can satisfy their foods while the sugar is not absorbed in their body. In case of gymnema, as they prevent overeaters from eating too much, the sugar is not absorbed in their intestines.. After all, the appetite can be suppressed for overseas.
I'll be very happy if you get interested in these taste modifier plants.
